   I’ve wanted the Grand Department Store gift set for over a year and finally decided to get it. It’s absolutely astounding in detail and design. Whether you’re an adult collector or the parents of children or a child yourself, this is an exceptionally cool set. It’s also a steal in terms of what you receive. Each of the four sets that come with the gift set version are available a la carte for roughly $30-$40 a piece, while the Grand Department Store alone is roughly $100 by itself. So for the cost of the Mall and one of the sets, you basically get the other three free. And if you have the Town Girl sets that come with dresses, shoes, and accessories, you’ll have the perfect opportunity to display all the usually unused pieces. I highly recommend sticky tack for displays that you don’t want moving or for tiny pieces like the make up brush and chocolates. Sticky tack will not harm the plastic, though I don’t recommend putting any on surfaces or items that have stickers as it will discolor the stickers. All in all: highly recommend as a gift for yourself or others!

   This hearkens back to days of yesteryear when the department store was the place to go and do all of your shopping rather than a mall or big box venue. My kids played with the Critters for many years and even though they’ve grown up, we still collect and enjoy them for mostly display purposes (yes, we sometimes still play). The Calico Critters Town Grand Department Store Gift Set is one of the most extensive kits we’ve ever gotten. It comes with the fashionable Stella Rabbit and tons of furniture and accessories. Many accessories — and tiny ones at that, so I would say this is more of a 5+ play set rather than a 3+. There is lots to see and do on this two story extravaganza. My 14 year old daughter unpacked and had it put together (with only a little help from dad) in about an hour. Stickers and all. Once together it is is truly impressive and would make a fun centerpiece for a Calico town set-up. Two inconsequential pieces were missing, but that was still a bit of a disappointment. Not enough to keep us from being wowed by the balcony, make-up counter, bakery section, elevator and other intricate details. It holds together well enough, but for younger kids it may be a little fragile and small accessories could get easily lost. This would make a generous and welcome gift for a Calico fan.    This calico critters set is completely epic. We have had the delicious restaurant as well as the grocery store from this line set up for some time, along with numerous critters and a calico critters blue vehicle. These toys get played with so often, especially by my 3 1/2-year-old who loves to play with these sets by herself during quiet times. I love listening to her chat to herself about the different foods that are going into the grocery basket, the chef who is serving foods to the mommy and daughter who are sitting at the table, etc. This department store is absolutely epic. We do not live in a city and there are no department stores locally, so my daughter does not have a big frame of reference for this. But when I explained to her that this was a store with a chocolate shop and a place to try on purses and dresses, she cottoned on to the idea immediately and was quickly exchanging toy money for the fun things she wanted to buy, especially the chocolates. We already had the exact same Stella hopscotch rabbit in the same outfit from a single standalone purchase, so be aware if you’ve been buying the little figures, that you may already have an identical Stella in your collection. However, my daughter was delighted that Stella had a twin sister so this didn’t appear to be a puzzling situation for her. The revolving door seems to capture the imaginations of both my daughter and my slightly older son, as does the elevator, which provides an excuse for the figures to move all around and visit the different areas of the store. I like that it can be configured in a number of different ways, and that there is plenty of seating and lots of accessories to make it very interactive and fun. I so appreciate that these are the types of adorable figures that will be fun for my daughter and her friends to play with for many years to come.

   Love this set! It was everything I hoped it would be. The spinning door, the working elevator , the details on the body of the buildings and all the extra decorative play sets. It is the perfect addition to the other Town Series sets we already own. I do wish it came with a full floor vs the parts you can move around. You can have rooftop dining but you have to give up the floor below. Awwww, the decisions one has to make. I see this set being filled with hours of fun and the possibilities are endless. It does feel fairly sturdy also and it was welcome discovery to discover that it can be folded shut when you are not playing🙂. My little gd has been saying she “needs” it for quite some time. The one negative is the stickers, particularly the flags don’t seem to stick well so a bit of your own glue is needed and maybe even to keep the flag poles in place. All of this pales in comparison to the positives.

    This is really a dream come true for every Sylvanian Families collector. The storefront is lovely with lots of embossing, it’s versatile in terms of arrangement, and there are so many sets and accessories included. Only thing that peeved me is that at first DollsByDorcel sent in without an outer box. Meaning they stuck the shipping label on the product box itself. There were stickers all over and a hole in the box. I approached customer service and they kindly sent a replacement even before collecting the old one back. If you order this, be sure to include in the remarks for them to ship it with a shipping box. Also, as another reviewer mentioned, a tiny bit of tack would help in keeping the cosmetic bottles in place every time the building moves a little. One more comment would be that the sticker that is supposed to go on the front of the store (the area in my picture) does not stay on. It keeps coming out and so I removed it completely.
